Said the Saviour of Pakistan:

You must understand the environment in Pakistan. This has become a moneymaking concern. A lot of people say if you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped. [link]

And this man has the nerve to pretend that Pakistan’s problems are of image alone. Men like him — well-spoken pseudo-modernists — do more damage to women’s issues than the textbook patriarchal bigot. With this latest gaffe, President Musharraf has undermined the credibility of his own ideal of enlightened moderation, and insulted Pakistanis and women everywhere.

If it weren’t for the brutal honesty of the HRCP and others, he’d probably be quite comfortable claiming that Mukhtar Mai and Shazia Khalid were “asking for it.”

Another gem from our beloved leader:

Leave the developing world aside; I think we are better than all of them. Bring the developed world and let us compare Pakistan’s record, under me, a uniformed man, with many of the developed countries. I challenge that we will be better off.
